Scott Paynton, Michael Conway, Laura Birshan, and Greg Gaiera started their 2nd Annual Bike & Surf California. The tour started in Fort Bragg on June 18, 2009.
Last year, Scott and Mike rode 600 miles down the coast of California towing their surfboards and all of their gear. Why did they do that? As surfers, they are increasingly conscious of the environmental impact they have as they drive up and down the coast looking for surf. As a result, they wanted to take a surfing road trip down the coast of California in an environmentally friendly way. Through the journey, they were able to bring attention to others regarding the many environmental issues that face our coast. They are completely self-sufficient on the trip.
As part of their awareness-raising campaign, they used the trip as a way to raise funds for cancer research. Last year they were able to raise $2,700 for the American Cancer Society. This year, they take Laura and Greg on the ride, and hope to raise $10,000.00 for cancer research. Scott and Mike hope to make this an annual trip for more and more people each year.
B!g Sur Bar will keep them fueled through those long hauls along the coast. Best of luck to you all!
